A Fast Birth of Baby Connor at St. Joseph Hospital of Denver

Birth Photography at St. Joseph Hospital

I first met John and Catherine in November at our Santa Mini Session. Catherine reached out to me a couple weeks later about photographing the birth of their baby boy Connor and I was thrilled. She had informed her due date was Mach 5th and they planned on going to St. Joseph Hospital . She also told me their first babies birth was really fast so I told her when it was time for them to head to the hospital with their second birth I would head that way as well.

On Sunday February 12th I received a text at 4:30pm “having contractions, 3 that were 30min apart and 2 that were 15min apart. I am not sure they warrant just Braxton’s from working in the ER all day earlier but my husband is nervous so we will be leaving to go down and get checked.” Since they live an hour away her husband thought it was best to make their way to the hospital. I was at the grocery store, finished checking out, made my way home to grab my gear and was on my way hospital. At 4:45  Catherine texted me saying contractions were 10min apart. She was dilated to 3cm and 80% effaced. When I arrived they were both in good spirits, Catherine was really hoping Connor would wait, she was still on the schedule at work for another week, grandma had planned on flying in for the birth and they did not have the car seat. Around 9:00pm  doctors ended up sending them home as contractions started to become less consistent. I checked in with her throughout the week, she continued to have minimal, irregular contractions.

On February 18th at 4am Catherine woke up to contractions they headed to the hospital at 6:47am with contractions every 6min she was pretty confident this was the “real deal” as she stated. She was admitted to triage upon arrival, they continued to keep me posted as I loaded up and headed to St. Josephs. At 8:41am I was notified that she was being moved to Labor and Delivery, I wasn’t very far from the hospital. While in the parking garage another texted came through at 8:46  Catherine was 6cm with a bulging bag.  I quickly made my way to labor and delivery checked in and was waiting for the nurse to tell me what room they have moved her to.

So they are family of doctors, she works at St. Josephs as well as her dad who happened to be on the schedule that morning and was able to be there for the birth,  John works in Colorado Springs but also travels to another site in the Denver area. He was working at the Denver location and was notified to make his way to the hospital. He was still in his scrubs when he arrived, stopped by the room to see how Catherine was doing and then went to get cleaned up and changed. While he was gone Catherine had the urge to start pushing so they messaged him that baby was on his way so he ran back just in time to witness his baby boys birth.

I am talking to the receptionist at the labor and delivery area and getting a bit antsy, they keep telling me they did not have a patient with that name at the check in. I receive another text message from John that baby had arrived. I was so disappointed, I didn’t get to capture his birth, this is why I stress to my clients to keep me informed so I can quickly find them. In the end it all worked out. I was able to capture the intimate moments of mom and dad with baby as well as other family members as they began to trickle in and big sister who was ecstatic to meet her baby brother.
